What is Testosterone? – How Can I Increase it Naturally

I often hear on the radio commercials about drugs improving the testosterone level. I decided that I really want to find out what is testosterone, why do I need it and how can I increase it naturally. After age 40 the testosterone level gradually decreases so being close to 50 I really can benefit from boosting my testosterone level.

Testosterone is a male hormone but in a smaller amount it also can be found in women. Testosterone affects sexual features and development and it's also affects the brain, bone and muscle mass, fat distribution, the vascular system, energy levels, genital tissues and sexual functioning.

Most of the testosterone is made by the testicles in males and by the ovaries in females and in small amount by the adrenal glands. The pituitary gland controls the level of testosterone in the body. This hormone tells the body to make more testosterone if needed.

You can increase your testosterone level naturally by watching your diet. Limit your carbohydrate intake. A diet high in simple sugars and starches can create your blood levels of cortisol and insulin to spike. These two hormones harm your body's production of testosterone. Eat more fruits and vegetable. Avoid consuming too many saturated fats and completely avoid trans fats. You can find good fats in fish such as salmon, flaxseed oil, nuts, and avocado.  Foods high in fiber are also good such as oatmeal. Don't eat too much estrogen which is often found in poultry.

Every time you ejaculate, you lose nutrients such as vitamins B6, B12 and E, calcium, magnesium, selenium and zinc. You also want to replenish these vitamins and minerals. Taking vitamin C is also important.

Exercise is also important. Whit exercise you can also control your weight. Excess weight will elevate you estrogen level.

Testosterone gets released in your body when you sleep. You need plenty of sleep preferable between seven to nine hours.

If you are not sure about your testosterone level visit your family doctor, a simple blood test will do it.

Duct Tape – We Can't Live Without It

Duct tape is a durable fabric-based tape. It has rubber adhesive on one side and polyethylene coating on the other side making it waterproof. Originally it was called Duck tape due to the waterproof nature. It was designed for the military in 1942 during World War II for use as a sealing tape for ammunition cases. Originally it was green.

Soon the military realized that due to its strength, flexibility and waterproof nature it can be used to repair various equipments. Besides the military applications NASA was using it during the Apollo spaceflights. I wouldn't be surprised if there are a couple of rolls of duct tape on the Space Station too.

After World War II when the housing industry was booming, someone discovered that the tape works great in joining heating and air conditioning duct work. Today there are better tapes for this application and the use of duct tape is against building codes in many states. The color changed from green to silver, but there are other colors too.

Duct tape can be used to fix many things although often you only want to use it as a temporary fix in an emergency situation for example. You can use it to temporarily patch up holes to keep the moisture out like a broken window. You can repair a broken objects with it or just to tie things together. It could be used as a temporary fix for a leaking pipe or hose.

Today the use of duct tape goes far beyond this. There are duct tape costumes. Since duct tape comes in many different colors, not only silver, these costumes are very colorful. Duct tape can be used to make a valet, purse and various artistic objects.

It's a good idea to keep some duct tape at home and maybe in your car. If all else fails try the duct tape.

How Much Water Should I Drink?

Water is essential to stay alive, there is no doubt about that. About 60 to 70 % of our body is water. Blood is mostly water and your muscles, lungs, brain and other organs need water to be able to function properly. Water helps to regulate your body temperature and water makes is possible to provide nutrients to your organs and tissues. Water also transports oxygen and removes waste. It also protects you joints and organs.

We lose water thru urination, respiration and by sweating. We lose more water when we are active. Alcohol and certain medication will also increase the amount of water your body loses.

If we lose water from our body and we don't replenish it we can get dehydrated.  The symptom of dehydration is muscle and joint pain, lower back pain, headache and constipation. If your urine have a darker color and a strong odor, that's a sign that you are not drinking enough water.

If you are healthy you know when you have to drink water. Although some doctors say that you have to drink 6-8 glasses of water, there is no sense to "force" yourself to drink a lot of water. Many times water bottling companies want you to buy their product. Their claim that water cures or prevents illnesses and help you to lose weight are not well founded and often simply marketing gimmicks.

You don't always have to drink water to replace the water you lost from your body. At least 20 % of the water comes from the foods you eat. With soft drinks the problem is too much sugar and extra calories. Juices are good source with the added vitamins and sport drinks help keep your electrolytes in balance. Caffeinated beverages count too but too much caffeine is not necessarily good for you.

What Does the Prostate Do? – How Can You Reduce the Risk of Prostate Cancer?

The prostate gland is part of the male reproductive system. Its main function is to secrete prostate fluid, one of the components of semen during ejaculation. It surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. During ejaculation the prostate contracts, closing off the opening between the bladder and the urethra and releases fluid into the urethra and pushes semen thru.

Due to its location, a swollen prostate compresses the urethra and irritates the walls of the bladder causing abnormal urination. A growing prostate can be benign also called Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. It can also be cancerous.

You cannot prevent prostate cancer which is the most common cancer diagnosed in men but changing your lifestyle you can reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer.

Healthy diet is important. Below is a list of what you have to include and exclude from your diet:

  • Avoid fatty foods. Low-fat diet has other benefits too.
  • Stay away from animal fats as much as you can. Use olive oil, nuts or seeds in your diet.
  • Eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are also full of vitamins and nutrients. They not only reduce the risk of prostate cancer but have many other benefits too.
  • Eat fish such as salmon, sardines, and tuna. Fatty acid from fish called omega-3 can also reduce the risk of prostate cancer.
  • Reduce the amount of dairy products such as milk, cheese, butter and yoghurt from your diet.
  • Green tea has a supplement which reduces the risk of prostate cancer.
  • Tofu, soy beans, kidney beans, lentils and peanuts have a nutrient called isoflavones which reduces the risk of prostate cancer.
  • Drink alcohol with moderation.

Maintain a healthy weight. This is something you have to watch anyways. Healthy weight is good for the overall health.

Exercise regularly. Include exercise in your daily life. Regular exercise will also help you to lose weight.

There is not enough proof that frequent ejaculation will reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

How Do We Manage to Survive in This Complex World?

As soon as we are born we start to experience life and we start to "survive". Our senses are filled with whatever surrounds us. These experiences are pleasant or unpleasant. By nature we are the kind of creatures who don't like to suffer, so we are constantly looking for pleasant experiences and trying to avoid unpleasant experiences. To be able to do that we carefully observe our environment.

There are certain things we can already observe in our environment from a very young age. To simplify things here I just talk about people and objects.

There are millions of people and objects surround us. We can notice that some of them are almost permanent or just slowly change. Think about your family or your neighborhood. Some of them constantly change. Think about what you see on television or passengers on a train. By recognizing this we learn to trust in those things which are more permanent. This gives a sense of security in "space".

Another thing we learn that we can "predict" the future to a certain level. This is because things don't change, at least most of the time suddenly. This gives a sense of security in time. If our environment would constantly and rapidly change that would be unbearable.

We also notice that there are many similar objects we don't have to learn about each individual person or object which belongs to a group. Think about a nation, or cars.

It also helps that we learn to imitate others around us. That's how we learn how to use a spoon. Sometimes we don't even know why we do things, we just follow others.

Since pleasant experiences give happiness and satisfaction we use our knowledge to get more of these experiences. We learn early that they don't come easy, it takes certain effort to get satisfied. Think about when you go to the gym or when you finish a project. At a very early age we also find out that there is always help you just have to learn how to ask for it. Think about a crying baby or visiting your doctor.

You Don't Have to Be Optimistic All the Time

In our society everything seems to make us believe that we have to be optimistic and happy all the time. Pessimistic people often pictured as losers. They expect from us to smile no matter what and to say that everything will be just fine. They make us believe that we are either born optimistic or pessimistic.

The one-size-fits-all optimism doesn't really work and can be harmful sometimes. Optimism and pessimism are feelings about the future. Both optimism and pessimism act like energizers in certain situations. If we were only realistic about our future we wouldn't even try to do things saying "it's just impossible".

Optimism and pessimism can also be a mind-set to adopt certain situations. In some situations it's better to be optimistic in others better to be pessimistic. Optimism can help us not to give up and cope with difficulties. Pessimism can help us to prepare ourselves if we won't succeed. Pessimism can help to better protect ourselves. This is also called defensive pessimism.

Of course in many situations it's much better to be optimistic. Some examples are when you are looking for a job, start to date, want to lose weight or start a business. Optimism can work against you when you gamble, when you are an investor, when you think that you can always get what you want.

Pessimism can be of course a negative feeling too. When you think that you will never get a job, never find a boy or girlfriend or never will be able to lose weight. Pessimism is bad when it makes you sort of give up.

Pessimism is good when it protects you, when it prepares you to the "what if" situation. Whit a pessimistic mind-set you will able to handle stress better. Pessimism is good when you don't over-expand because you are not 100% sure about your job and/or income or as an investor you diversify. Pessimism is also somewhat good when you or someone close to you have an illness. It helps you to prepare yourself to the worse scenario.

Why Is It So Hard To Do The Second Time?

I bought a desk for my son last year. The kind of desk which comes in parts and you have to assemble it. I enjoy doing things like this and we did it together with my son. When I do it the first time I carefully follow instructions. I organize all the parts and the tools I need for the task. Being organized and following every step in the instructions makes it much simpler.

I bought the same desk for my younger son this year. I thought that since I put it together a year ago this time it'll be a lot easier and faster too. I didn't spend that much time organizing the parts and later on I found out that some of the tools were missing too. I also tried to remember the step-by-step instructions without looking at the instructions. It turned out that it was a bad idea. I ended up putting together parts in the wrong order and had to take them apart. I realized that doing it the second time was much harder. I thought I would remember everything after a year but I didn't. We finally put the desk together, but it took longer and it was a real headache.

I head the same experience with directions too. When I drive somewhere I've never been I carefully plan the trip. I Google it and I print it out for reference. There is no problem if I have to go back the next day but a year later could be a problem. The second time I just try to remember the trip and on the way to my destination I realize that most of the details are pretty foggy.

It happens to me all the time with the computer too. When I have to fix a problem the first time I gather all the information I need and then I just follow instructions. The second time a few months later I just try to use my memory which very often fails. Many times I even forget where to start and I just remember bits and pieces.

I learnt my lesson in the past so when I do something now the second time I try to do exactly the same way I did it the very first time. No more frustration.

Is Risk-Taking Good or Bad?

Taking risks has been part of our daily life since the early evolutionary times. Back than without risk there was no survival or reproduction. Risk-taking lead mankind to our sophisticated society we live now. These days behind risk taking besides survival and reproduction there is money, love and power.

Risk-taking is a very positive behavior if it's used properly. Without risk life would be very boring, everything would be predictable. When we talk about risk we always imply that there is a possibility of danger, tension and loss.

Each risk has two sides, an upside and downside. If the downside is much higher than the upside the risk is considered a "stupid" risk. Why would you spend your paycheck on lottery tickets? You could lose everything and win nothing.

Calculated risk or intelligent risk is when the downside or loss is limited and the reward far outweighs the downside. When you apply for a job there is risk, you might be rejected but on the upside you could land in a great carrier. When you try to date someone you could also be rejected but you could also find some who will be with you for the rest of your life. When you start a business there is risk, with unlimited potentials on the upside.

People, businesses, governments take risks all the time. We do things all the time where we are not sure about the outcome. Risk with a limited downside is always welcome but unlimited downside or "gambling" can turn against us.

Why Did I Join the Gym?

I have been regularly exercising a few years now. I bought a couple of equipment years ago and I set up an area for exercise in the basement. I enjoyed it for some time especially when I saw the benefits of it. It was convenient because all I had to do is to go down in the basement and everything was right there. I think the reason I started to exercise is to boost my energy. Later on I realized that an hour or so "pain" translates into measurable benefits. My cardiologist and family doctor noticed the changes and my blood test results came out better too.

I have been trying to exercise twice a week. Trying means that most of the time I only do it once a week. Usually they recommend exercising almost every day but from my experience I can tell that even one day makes a big difference.

Over the years exercising in my basement became boring. The same equipment all the time, by myself. It wasn't really as pleasurable as it used to be. Sometimes I even stopped doing it for weeks.

Then My boys wanted to lift weights and they didn't want to settle with some cheap weight bench, they wanted to join the gym. Then we realized that the whole family should join so we did the beginning of this year.

It's amazing how much equipment they have to work for any muscle. Usually I go late Sunday morning when it's not that busy anymore but there are still some good looking young women and that definitely helps to go thru my exercise routine.

Usually I start my exercise walking around an indoor track a couple of times then I spend about 30 minutes on an elliptical keeping my heart rate in the upper cardiovascular range. Then I spend about 20 minutes on the weight lifting machines. I use about 20 different machines every time I go. I couldn't afford all that having at home. And the young ladies, I can tell you that really helps. My boys of course go 3-4 times a week and I know it's a very good place for young men like them.

Going thru the exercise routine is somewhat a pain but well worth it. And when I'm done it feels good to say, yes, I did it again.

What Am I Doing On the Cloud?

The "Cloud" is something I often hear about but I'm not exactly sure when do I really use it. Later on I found out that I use it all the time I just wasn't aware of it. These days everybody is on the cloud, I'll give you some examples below.

Cloud computing is computing as a service, you don't have to buy a physical product. Cloud computing can provide you with the necessary data storage, applications or even processing speed. You don't need a large hard drive anymore. In cloud computing you are connected to a large number of computers and servers which can be located anywhere in the world.

The idea of cloud computing was mentioned in the 1960's when John McCarthy mentioned that "computation may someday be organized as a public utility". In this sense it could be compared to the electricity grid. No, Al Gore didn't invent the cloud ;-).

Cloud computing connects computers and other devices such as tablets, cell phones and certain TV's to each other. Cloud computing makes it possible to easily share information between these devices.

When do we use cloud computing? Basically we use cloud computing when if our computer is damaged the services and data is still available (from another device). In other words cloud computing makes it possible that your applications and data are safe even if you have computer virus or your computer crashes. Here is a list of some examples:

  • Online email services are connected to the cloud such as Google, Microsoft and Yahoo mail. These are accessible from any device around the world.
  • Your music, pictures and videos can be stored on the cloud.
  • Social network sites are on the cloud connecting millions of members.
  • Financial and tax preparing software are available on the cloud. Whenever you pay bills on your bank's website you are on the cloud.
  • When you book a flight or make some reservations online you are on the cloud.
  • When you make online purchase you are using these services.
  • You can create and store documents on the cloud, you can even collaborate with others.

There are many advantages of cloud computing. You don't have to install all those programs, you don't need a large hard drive. You don't have worry about new versions or updates of these computing services. There are disadvantages too especially in the security and privacy area. Where is your private data stored such as bank account numbers, credit card numbers, and social security number and how safe is that storage?

What are Stem Cells – How Can We Benefit from Them?

I have to admit I didn’t know much about this subject until recently when I came across an article and I had problem understanding it. Biology has never been my favorite subject.

As I was reading more about stem cells I realized that this is something could be important in my lifetime too.  Cell-based therapies can prevent and cure many presently incurable illnesses hopefully in my lifetime. There won’t be any need for transplantable tissues and organs.

Stem cells are very unique cells. They have the potential to develop into many different cell types during early life and growth and later on they can repair damaged cells. When a stem cell divides it can remain stem cell or become a more specialized cell such as muscle cell, red blood, or brain cell.

There are basically two types of stem cells, embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells. Embryonic stem cells are developed from embryos from eggs that have been fertilized in vitro, they don’t come from eggs fertilized in a woman’s body. Embryonic stem cells are grown in laboratory. A large number of cells can be grown this way and stay healthy for a relatively long period of time. These stem cells can divide in to any type of specialized cells. Adult stem cells are also undifferentiated cells found among regular cells. Their primary function is to maintain and repair the tissue in which they are found. Adult stem cells can be found in many organs and tissues such as the brain, bone marrow, blood vessel, muscle, heart, teeth, liver and more. There are only a small number of stem cells in each tissue. It’s difficult to grow a large number of adult stem cells.

Stem cells offer the possibility of a renewable source of replacement cells and tissues. With stem cells there is a possibility to cure Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, diabetes, spinal cord injury, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis and many more.

Why Do We Need a Good Sleep – Every Night?

Sleep Stages
When people need extra time to keep up with the demands of everyday life the only answer seems to be cutting back on sleep. When you understand sleep you’ll find out that this answer could be very damaging to your health. You need a healthy sleep-wake cycle.

How much sleep do we need and how many hours we actually sleep? A lot of people sleep only about 6 hours a night. An adult needs about 7.5-9 hours to completely restore physical and mental energy.

There are two types of sleep, REM (Rapid Eye Movement) and non-REM sleep. Non-REM sleep has 4 different stages going from transition sleep to deep sleep. Non-REM sleep restores your physical energy, REM sleep restores your mental energy. During the night your sleep goes back and forth between REM and non-REM sleep. One cycle last about 90 minutes. If you don’t get enough sleep you have to pay the price with REM sleep since the body wants to restore physical energy first.

What happens if we don’t get enough sleep? We don’t have enough energy throughout the day and we probably forget how it does feel to feel good. But there are other more serious effects too:

  • Fatigue, lack of motivation
  • Moodiness
  • Inability to cope with stress
  • Concentration, memory problems
  • Weight gain
  • Increased risk of diabetes, heart disease and other health problems

With sleeping in on the weekends unfortunately you can’t solve your sleeping problem. You need at least eight hours quality sleep every night.

A Good Personal Finance Program Gives a Peace of Mind

Without a personal finance program it’s hard to manage your money. Most people have several bank accounts, credit cards, loans, retirements account and investment accounts. Without a financial program it’s impossible to keep track of all of these accounts.

I personally use Quicken Premier 2011. It’s really worth the money. I only buy it every 3 years because it allows me for 3 years to use its online features.

There are a few very useful features I use all the time. I download transactions from my banks and credit card companies every couple of days. This way it’s very easy to monitor how I spend my money. I also know exactly what is charged on my credit cards. I match the downloaded transactions with my saved receipts. If I find anything suspicious I call my bank or credit card company.

Another feature I often use is to manage my bills. It’s very easy to schedule bills. I also schedule my paychecks too. If the paychecks vary week to week it’s possible to enter an average paycheck. I know exactly how much money I have in my accounts today tomorrow, next week, next month or even a few months from now. Now surprises.

As I mentioned I download the transactions every couple of days so when it’s time to reconcile my account at the end of the billing cycle all the transactions are there. Many times it only takes less than a minute to reconcile a bank or credit card account. It’s so easy that it’s actually fun.

I have been using Quicken for over 10 years and I couldn’t live without it. I save a backup of the Quicken file on an external hard drive once a week. Once my hard drive crashed and restoring everything from the backup files was very simple. I never thought about using an online financial software. I like to keep my personal information personal.

Cancer-Fighting Benefits of Broccoli and Other Cruciferous Vegetables

Broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, kale, cabbage belongs to this group of vegetables. They are not only healthy because they contain vitamins, minerals and fiber but they also contain phytochemicals such as sulforaphane. Sulforaphane helps the body to activate detoxification enzymes and to prevent cell damage.

Cruciferous vegetables also help to protect against cancer by reducing oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is caused by harmful molecules called oxygen-free radicals.

These vegetables can reduce the risk of colon, lung, prostate, breast and other cancers.

An important thing you should know is that the way you prepare these vegetables matters. An enzyme called myrosinase has to be present to form the anti-inflammatory component sulforaphane. Many people destroy myrosinase by overcooking these vegetables. Steaming it for two to four minutes is the best way to protect the enzyme and the vegetable’s nutrients. Brussels sprouts contain a large amount of this essential enzyme.

The compound found in broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables is one the strongest anti-cancer fighters.

I Love Family Vacations

We’ve just got back from our summer vacation from Europe. I enjoyed every moment of it or maybe almost every moment of it. That’s because I don’t like to go thru or wait at airports.

This summer we went to Hungary. I like it since I was born there but my wife likes it too and she was born in New Jersey. My boys love it of course and it’s not only because the drinking age is 16 (for beer and wine) but also because they have lots of cousins to play with.

We spent most of the time in Budapest, where my family lives, on the Buda side in the suburbs. It is a very quiet and nice place, and there is no violence. Although people lock the front door all the time which usually has several safety locks. We stayed in a four bedroom apartment on the third floor. The only problem was that there was no elevator, but everything else was just perfect.

The weather was excellent warm, but not hot and without the humidity. Every day was sunny, nice and cool during the night which helped me to have deep sleeps.

We used public transportation which is very good in Budapest. The bus stop was right there where we stayed and we could be in the center city in just 20 minutes. We bought a weekly pass which was about $25 and it was good for all the public transportation within the city limits.

We spent one day at the Lake Balaton. We were lucky with the weather again. Lake Balaton is a fresh-water lake, about 77 km long and 3-12.5 km wide. It’s about 2 hours from Budapest.

I think the greatest thing in family vacations is that we do things together and all those great memories that nothing can erase.

Can You Really Make Money Fast on the Stock Market?

I recently started to follow the stock market. It’s amazing how the market fluctuates day after day. A lot of the numbers didn’t make any sense until I read a couple of books visited financial web sites and watched business news on the TV.

Soon I found out that basically there are two types of investors, passive and active. Most of the passive investors let someone else manage their money and don’t really care about the market’s daily, weekly even monthly movements.  Sometimes they don’t even know what exactly they have in their portfolio.

The active investors closely follow the market’s every movement and they frequently buy and sell securities based on the market conditions. Successful active investors know exactly what they have.

So how much money can you make? Passive investors make less money. They usually make money when the market is in an uptrend and they lose money when the market is in the downtrend. A successful passive investor can make 5-10 % a year.

An active investor can also make money when the market is in a downtrend by what is called shorting stocks.  Although shorting stocks is risky, but in a downtrend you can make money faster then in an uptrend. An active investor makes about 10-15% a year.

There are also options which are derivatives of securities such as stocks. The price movement of options is not as simple as it is for the underlying stocks. Options which are basically contracts also expire, so after a certain time they can be worthless. Options are risky but they are highly leveraged. For example a 1% price movement of the underlying can result in a 15-20% price increase in the option’s value. With options it’s possible to make 100% profit in less then a week.

If you want to start to invest it’s best to get familiar with stocks first and a couple of years later move on to options trading. No matter what you trade, you can’t control how much money you are going to make but you can control how much money you lose.

You Need to Escape from Multitasking to Relax Your Brain

It’s hard to imagine our lives without computers, cell phones, television, computer games. The use of technology is part of our daily life. We constantly check our emails surf the web, check the news, and watch our favorite shows or movies often in the same time. It’s only possible if we teach our brain how to multitask.

There are benefits of multitasking. We are more productive. Multitasking also gives a chance to escape from the present while doing something else. Sometimes multitasking can be dangerous for example driving and using your cell phone in the same time. On the other hand multitasking doesn’t teach us to focus. When you multitask you try to pay attention several things in the same time. But is it good if you really have to focus only on one thing?

With new technologies we are addicted to multitasking. We think that without those gadgets our life would be very boring. There was a time when none of these gadgets existed and people were not bored at all and they could accomplish great things in history.

We need to escape sometimes from multitasking and just do one thing to relax our eyes and brain. Even if it lasts only 10-15 minutes a day it could make a big difference. Take a walk, listen to soft music without doing anything else, read a book or just sit back in a quiet room closing your eyes for a few minutes.
